64-Bit Instructions for Singularity (Mac Users - must read!)

Free To Play

Last Time, on EVE Online 64-Bit Progress:
The March 5th mass test 13 revealed some interesting memory and FPS concerns with the initial implementation. Devs scrambled to find the causes and modify the code to prevent further disruptions.

And now, the continuation:
Our Engine and Build teams have tackled a fair number of interesting issues in the 64-Bit client. We resolved a unique quirk of EVE memory allocation related to module duration and scene clean up, and have instituted fixes for problems related to frametime.

Excitingly, we’ve also implemented a few changes to allow Mac users to experience EVE in 64-bit glory. So, we’re going to try mass testing again as indicated HERE 74 !

There are a few specific steps that need to be taken for you to participate in this (now) twice-in-a-lifetime experience:

PC
1: Restart your launcher to get the latest version. The necessary Launcher version is 1501045.
2: Select Singularity as your server.
3: Start the client!

Mac
1: Restart your launcher to get the latest version. The necessary Launcher version is 1501045.
2: Open EVE Launcher Preferences in the Menu Bar.
3: Enable ‘Use dev versions’ under wine options.
4: Select the following specific Wine Dev branch*: winehq-macos-binary.
5: Allow Wine** to download and update (sometimes restarting the launcher afterward is necessary).
6: Select Singularity as your server.
7: Start the client!

*- Please note that selecting this Wine version is officially approved for Singularity use only! If you switch to any other server, INCLUDING TRANQUILITY, we recommend that you disable development Wine to ensure a stable experience.

**- This Wine version does not include the custom key bindings present in ccp-master wine. Discussion regarding the removal of those bindings can be found HERE 29

Industry Changes Coming To Eve Online

Industry Changes

A significant update to industry, focusing mainly on Tech I ship manufacturing, will go live in the middle of April in a series of two updates. Material requirements for all Tech I ship blueprints will be updated, and new manufacturing tiers are established, making industry progression more consistent and easier to understand.

AFTERMATH OF THE INVASION

"Over the course of the Triglavian Invasions, EDENCOM and the core empires became increasingly concerned by the threat of subversion of ship and capsule systems by the invading forces. The demonstrated ability of the Triglavians to infiltrate information networks and subvert key communications backbones raised the very real prospect of the capital ship and line battleship fleets of the empires being crippled by Triglavian information warfare.

While the empires deployed selected capital fleets to combat invasion flashpoints, and kept large guard fleets of capital ships close to their home systems, a large proportion of the fleets were rushed into refitting programs aimed at hardening their systems against infiltration and subversion. Additional refitting was also carried out to enhance crew survival systems, improve reactor core temperature regulation, and enable increased power utilization of empire naval vessels.

Developments in these technologies were shared across the empires through the EDENCOM alliance, and inevitably some of the new resource extraction and manufacturing technology also fell into the hands of criminals and pirates. All ship designs are undergoing extensive upgrades to guard against subversion by the Triglavians in the uneasy aftermath of the invasions and the formation of the Triglavian region of Pochven." - Olivera en Zakali, Placid GalNetNews"

A SIGNIFICANT UPDATE TO INDUSTRY

The path for aspiring builders in New Eden will be clearer than ever – so if you have ever thought about getting into industrial production, this is a good time to start! In addition, experienced builders will have a new set of challenges to rise to in their field of expertise.

Playing EVE Online In A Browser Window Is Really Cool - When It Works

Eve Online Browser Game

EVE Anywhere lets players on Safari, Edge, Chrome or Firefox browsers log into their EVE accounts and jump into the world of New Eden without downloading a game client. It's similar to how what eventually became Google Stadia was introduced a few years ago, with Assassin's Creed Odyssey being easily accessible through a browser window. Now that is nothing new with Stadia and other cloud services on offer, however it's always intriguing seeing new games, and game genres embrace technology like this.

Logging into the EVE Online website will prompt a "Play In Browser" button if your account qualifies. Currently the Beta is available to Omega pilots in the USA and new players, EVE Anywhere provides a 1080p resolution feed with 60fps gameplay.

EVE Online itself isn't a super demanding game. It can be when a ton of players are in an area together (like one of the various massive battles that make up EVE's war history) but for most players getting a good resolution and framerate isn't that hard. However, what EVE Anywhere does is open the potential to players who may not necessarily have hard to play the game natively, or those who want to get their EVE Online fix when on a non-gaming rig.

EVE Anywhere enters beta

From today, a greater number of pilots have the opportunity to join a time-limited test of a cloud-based platform that allows a fully-featured EVE Online to be played in-browser, instantly.

Newly named as ‘EVE Anywhere’, the cloud platform has entered beta following a successful early-stage trial that saw EVE Online players explore the innovative and robust technology while helping improve its offering. The new test will help further shape and refine the platform while exploring the potential of wider availability in the future.

Conceived to expand the player community of EVE Online, EVE Anywhere removes barriers for newcomers, while providing veterans of New Eden with an extremely convenient way to access their game. The early-stage trial has already demonstrated that potential, seeing first-time EVE Online players stay for longer, with higher numbers converting into full-time pilots.

Federation Grand Prix Returns to EVE Online with New Monuments

Federation Grand Prix

Previous Federation Grand Prix have seen you race around various iconic sites in EVE Online including systems and space wrecks. You compete for best time and will be rewarded for various milestones you reach. Each time you race, you’ll do so on a new course.

As the event concludes, CCP will share some monuments meant to celebrate players and events throughout the history of EVE Online. New monuments this year include the Statue of Chribba which pays tribute to, “one of the most celebrated, trusted, and respected,” players in EVE Online.

There will also be an Alliance Tournament Monument. This one is meant to honor the “scale and tenacity” of combat. Finally, CCP will unveil the Project Discover Phase Two Monument. This one commemorates all the time the community has poured into helping scientists discover various exoplanets, fighting the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

Two Minor Changes Could Mean Big Things For EVE Online

Eve Online - Free To Play

This month has seen a flurry of announcements about EVE Online’s immediate future. Alongside the usual spaceship changes and rebalancing, a brand new, somewhat controversial skill system will be introduced, as well as what sounds like a largely cosmetic change to the game that could have huge implications for players.

In almost every big science fiction work that involves massive amounts of starships, those ships are arranged in organized battle formations, arrayed out like individual troops marching to battle. Not in EVE, though: In EVE, ships drop out of warp in a disorganized clump, roughly ball-shaped, and quickly begin to clip into one another as they hurry to “anchor” on their fleet commander to follow their maneuvers. Soon, this behavior will change. Several predetermined but customizable formations are being added to the game and will be made available to Fleet Commanders, or FCs, all across the galaxy. This will allow those FCs to determine what their fleet looks like when it arrives on the battlefield.

At a glance, this seems largely like a cosmetic change with little gameplay impact. However, according to CCP Rise, one of the senior game designers for EVE, this feature may be “super overpowered” and could change the face of the game. When large fleets do battle in EVE, positioning and range control are important factors that can cause a battle to go right, or terribly wrong. Even when greatly outnumbered, a well-positioned fleet can cause damage well above its apparent “weight class.” With the new Fleet Formations update, establishing good positioning initially may become a great deal easier.

EVE Online's New Jump Tunnels Spice Up Travel In A Much Needed Way

Space Gate Jump

One of the things I dislike most about EVE Online is the time it takes to travel from one system to the next. Spending an hour getting from Jita to some far-flung system in New Eden can be a chore sometimes, especially if you live on the outskirts of HiSec like I do (I've started to make my home in LowSec to do some piracy lately). One major reason why this always felt dull was not just the time it took, but also simply the animations going from one system to the next never really inspired much.

For those who have never played EVE Online, jump tunnels before were a simple animation to essentially hide a loading screen. It felt right out of 90's sci-fi - a simple, muted kaleidascope of color that looked like a warp tunnel from Stargate SG-1 or a show like that. It wasn't bad - but it never felt compelling to me. And, after seven or eight jumps in a row, it started to get downright mundane.

EVE Online will let you 'borrow' skills to try new ships soon

Eve Online Free To Play

In EVE Online, it's not just enough to accrue the millions of ISK required to fly a battleship. You also have to train up the skills required to fly one, an act that can take months of actual time. But soon, CCP will let you take EVE's spiciest ships for a test drive, letting you borrow the required skills with new "Expert System" consumables.

Announced last week, Expert Systems will give you a week of temporary skill points in a "variety of professions", without having to commit. Considering the length of time it takes to train up (and the skill point limits applied to free pilots), these are pitched as a good way to explore new styles of play.

EVE Online 'Reign' Update Improves Fleet Features

New Eve Online Event

There are few games with a relationship between players and devs quite like EVE Online. EVE's playerbase is known to be cut-throat and competitive, while also being devoted to the title, and its developer is known to foster the unique community of EVE Online as best it can. The result is a game that mixes the civilized with the wild west, where players will start an enormous inter-player war, but put it on hold for the holidays.

Players have a much greater impact on the game than in many other titles, MMORPG or otherwise. Many of the most important events in EVE Online are player-driven, as is essentially the game's whole economy. That doesn't mean the developer, CCP Games, is completely hands off though, and it just released an update to help players create Fleets easier.

Expert Systems Feature Coming To EVE Online, Though Not Without Controversy

CCP Games made the announcement via the EVE Online website, outlining what Expert System are and what they are  intended to provide. As a way to help new players navigate EVE Online's complex skill system, CCP is going to be selling Expert Systems, which are a group of skills designed around one of the core gameplay concepts of EVE. This could include skills aimed at helping players learn mining, or ship operation to start exploring right away.

Skills in EVE Online take real world time to train, meaning that in order to start flying that really cool Astero to explore, or jump beyond a simple Retriever for mining ore, players can wait days, even sometimes weeks and months before they can fly their new fit. Skill points are available as Skill Injectors on the in-game market, and CCP sells packages in the EVE Store that offer new players a sizeable stack of skill points in order to fast track the skill queue, but it can be expensive, both in game and out.

Both Sides Claim Victory In Massive EVE Online Battle

Ragnarök, the death of the Norse gods, played out in EVE Online in the wee hours of New Year’s eve. Hundreds of the game’s mightiest vessels gathered together in the M2-XFE system, and Titans from the game’s two largest factions spent over 12 hours exchanging fire and unleashing their incredibly devastating doomsday weapon systems. In the end, around 250 of these god-like war machines were nothing more than smoldering wreckage, including my own.

The fight was ostensibly over a Keepstar space station, one of the many Death Star equivalent installations that have been besieged during the war of extermination between The Imperium and the PAPI Coalition, with PAPI seeking to permanently remove The Imperium from their seat of power in the game. The station wasn’t of any particular strategic import, but, like many of the biggest Titan clashes in EVE’s history, the objective wasn’t the important part. Over the course of the 12-hour brawl, both sides continually escalated, bringing in more and more Titans, as well as other ships in small windows when measures to prevent large ships from using their jump drives to enter the system faltered. Part of the siege of M2 included a “cynosural jamming field” being erected in the system, removing the ability for jump drives to find a navigation beacon. Over the course of the night, this jamming field was either taken down voluntarily, or sabotaged several times. Though The Imperium came out the victor by number of Titans destroyed, both sides are claiming victory.

THE EVE ONLINE ECOSYSTEM OUTLOOK

In EVE, much of 2020 was spent in renovation working on the goal of regaining control of the EVE economy which had been spiraling towards major excess of ISK, minerals, and assets. This endeavor has not always been simple or comfortable, so you are to be acknowledged and thanked for your resilience. The stage has been set for a more abundant and sustainable future for EVE.

CSM collaboration has been very constructive this year, both with CSMs 14 and 15. Not being able to meet in person and build on relationships with the Council due to COVID-19 is regrettable, but hopefully the world will be in a better place soon and all can return to in-person meetings again. At the beginning of the Scarcity Phase, the strategic decision was made not to involve the CSM before the rest of the community. As fundamental changes were made to the DNA of the universe, preserving the integrity of everyone involved was a priority.

WINTER NEXUS - EVE'S HOLIDAY SEASON

Festive Capsuleers,

The holiday season is coming to EVE Online, so it's time to get together, and keep your weapons warm in the coming storm. Introducing the Winter Nexus, this year's furious fusion of festivities include the travelling winter-themed Volatile Ice Storms which feature Wightstorm sites, plus the 13 Days of Nexus login event, Chilling Spree, Yoiul Festival-themed Abyssal Proving Grounds, and - if you can believe it - even more, until 5 January!

VOLATILE ICE STORMS

Exclusive to the Winter Nexus holiday season, Volatile Ice Storms will appear and travel between systems in High, Low, and Null Security space, bringing specific environmental effects and content. With this seasonal weather come the Wightstorm combat sites, hacking sites, and ice mining sites.

Rewards include valuable Overseers' Effects, hundreds of festive ship SKINs, limited-time Cerebral Accelerators, rare faction modules, and blueprints for the new Rapture pirate implant set.

The Wightstorm Fleet has been drawn from the vast reserves of Sansha's Nation to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the appearance of Metaliminal Volatile Ice Storms across New Eden, and the strength of these fleets will depend on which part of space they are encountered in.
