EVE Online Receives Two Major Visual Updates Including Jita 4-4 Interior and Aura

Aura

Capsuleers, rejoice! CCP announced two major visual updates for EVE Online involving the interior of Jita 4-4 Trade Hub and everyone’s favorite AI, Aura.

First up is Jita 4-4. Undoubtedly, this is the most popular exchange hub in New Eden, and as a result, it’s received a pretty major overhaul to its interior. If you were following recent developments, you’ll be aware of its architectural expansion. But with this recent update, the interior has seen some improvements.

This has resulted in a larger interior with improvements to overall cosmetics of the hub. CCP touts the detail on display inside to match the “grandeur” of the exterior. Next time you’re there, be sure to stop by and take a look.

Eve Online will never die, says head of studio after 18 years

Eve Online

Whoever said "nothing is certain but death and taxes" never played Eve Online. The space-faring MMORPG has no central government to shake you down for road money, and space pilots are cloned anew after every ignoble death. After 18 years and countless updates, Eve is one of the longest-running MMOs in the industry. It predates World of Warcraft by over a year. It is older than Facebook. Alongside long-toothed MMOs like Runescape, it has survived where others have fallen. But surely even this infamous generator of sci-fi skulduggery must pay the final toll some time. Well, not according to Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of the game's developer, CCP.

"It's never going to die," he says.

Pétursson tells me this over a call in a quiet, model-strewn office, red-haired and looking a little fed-up with internet meetings after a year of pandemic lockdown.

"The pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Bible, like, take your pick," he says. "There's a lot of things that go on forever. The concept of money, the US dollar… These are social constructs and games are no different. They're social constructs. And if they do a good job of being relevant and keeping up with the times, there's no reason for them to end."

Better late than never, CCP's MMOG gets boxed retail distribution via Atari.

Eve Online

The newest generation of smartphones has begun to deliver on the ideal of having continual access to your data on the go with persistent web connections. As such, the iPhone is becoming ubiquitous, helped no doubt by its ease of use and the ever-growing number of apps available to users. In the relatively short time the iPhone has existed, it's already begun to have an impact on the gaming world. Given how stat-centric massively multiplayer online titles are, it was inevitable that there would be some steps made towards a marriage between the iPhone and our games; some developers are creating iPhone apps that extend certain aspects of MMOs beyond the game client.

This can be especially useful with a game like EVE Online, where players typically have a number of things going on, even while they're not logged in to play. While the EVE iPhone apps don't act as game clients, players can, for instance, check in on the skill progression of their characters, check their wallet balances as market transactions and contract sales take place while away from the client, and in general keep tabs on their virtual involvements in New Eden.

True stories of EVE Online to become comic book and TV series

Eve Online

The CCP Presents Keynote at the annual EVE Online Fanfest is usually a fairly tame retrospective on how CCP has a company has done the past year and where it's going in the future, but for EVE's tenth anniversary, CCP broke out the big guns. In addition to announcing a massive new collector's edition, the studio has also revealed plans to turn real stories of events inside the sandbox into professional comic books and even a TV series.

Industry giant Dark Horse Comics, the company responsible for comics like Hellboy and Sin City, will be publishing the 54-page graphic novel this winter in both a paid-for print form and a free digital download. For the lore buffs among us, Dark Horse will also be producing a colossal 184-page glossy colour hardback book covering all of the NPC backstory and lore behind EVE Online and DUST 514. Titled EVE Source, the book will be an in-character almanac of everything in the EVE setting that isn't player-created and will even include previously unreleased concept art.

Vote for Rixx Javix for CSM16

"o/ Everyone, this is Rixx Javix and I’m asking for your support as a candidate for the Council of Stellar Management.

You may know me from a thousand different directions. From the recent FFA I hosted 2 that set the record for most ship explosions ever in Low Security space, from the Freaky Frigates collection 13 that is currently being sold on the Official Eve Store, from the free swag I handed you once at an Eve player meet, from my RedBubble store, from my Eve Magazine EVEOGANDA 8 which I’ve been writing for over eleven years, from my spaceship posters that CCP sold, or from countless community events, charities, podcasts, streams, logos, or other projects that I’ve been involved with over the years.

Thing is, no matter how you know me (good or bad), you know that there are few players as passionate, dedicated, and committed to Eve Online. I play every single day that I can. I bring content to the game wherever I go in space. Events like our annual FFAs, DeathRaces, the Alliance Tournament, free books, maps (like the recent Eve Fantasy Map I worked on with Ithica Hawk 9) or the maps in Andrew Groen’s History of Eve book 1 series. Whatever you might think of me, I will bring that same level of commitment to my time as your representative on the CSM.

I care about this game, our community, and the players that play it.

I sincerely appreciate your support."

Eve Online economic analysis released

CCP Games, the makers of MMO Eve Online, has released its first quarterly economic newsletter, which analyses the population and economy of the game.

Eve Online

CCP Games, the makers of MMO Eve Online, has released its first quarterly economic newsletter, which analyses the population and economy of the game.

It's the first publication of its kind, and has been written by Eve's resident economist Eyjolfur Gudmundsson, who was previously the dean of Economics in CCP's home city of Reykjavik, and assistant Kjartan T Halldorsson.

Unlike most MMOs Eve Online is based largely on user-generated content, and features a highly complex economic model, based around a single persistent world made up of almost 200,000 subscribers.

According to Gudmundsson this creates markets "that behave in the same manner as markets in the real world," and means that managing this element of the game is crucial to its long-term appeal.

Top 8 Promotional Video Game Music Videos

Unlike most of the other videos on this list, there’s no gameplay clips of sequences from Eve Online. That’s because the actual gameplay of Eve is boring as hell, so I can see why they didn’t include it. I kid, I kid. This music video is more of a promotional video for CCP, showing the staff in the Icelandic, Atlanta and China areas, singing along to the song. Permaband has done about half a dozen songs since HTFU but to me, it’s still the best one they’ve done.

CSM 16 Elections are approaching!

CSM16

The CSM15 term is slowly coming to an end, but despite not having the pleasure to meet in person, we managed to remain productive by interacting daily via established Slack channels with EVE Online teams and hosting regular meetings with members across the CCP organization to cover topics ranging from new game feature designs, balance, marketing, live operations to reflecting on the past and brainstorming future opportunities.

EVE Online fixes boomerang exploit

Eve Online

Pilots looking to duck the long arm of the law in high-security space will need to find another way to perform their nefarious deeds, as EVE Online released a patch today fixing the so-called "boomerang exploit."

CCP considered it an official and actionable game exploit to avoid CONCORD retaliation in high-security space by attacking a target right after the aggressor warps away or within the same grid in which the player earned a Global Criminal Countdown. Those who used the exploit prior to the fix could have found themselves dealing with a much scarier force than CONCORD: game masters themselves. Now, any player with a GCC will simply be unable to warp away.

Other than keeping boomerangs in the hands of kangaroos where they belong, Crucible patch 1.6.3 contains a few localization fixes, the ability to add a station as a waypoint or destination through the API, and some pesky client crashing issues.

The authors of EVE Online confirmed work on an “ambitious” shooter in the game’s universe, which will “define the genre”

Eve Online

A shooter in the EVE Online universe, an evolution of Project Legion (codename), was already in development at London-based studio CCP Games. It was subsequently confirmed to be Project Nova, whose development was suspended at the end of 2018.

However, the creator of EVE Online hasn’t given up on his plans. The London office has been working on a project based on Unreal Engine 4 for several years. And new studio head Adrian Blunt, former VP of Game Development at Splash Damage, recently spoke about the upcoming shooter in EVE Online.

In an interview with MCV UK, Blunt said about 40 people are working on the project, but the final team size will depend on the game’s scale. According to him, this is a very ambitious shooter that will become defining for the genre: “When I had the opportunity to meet with the team, play a game, I was amazed at what the team was able to create.”

CCP London hires Splash Damage vet Blunt

Adrian Blunt
Eve Online maker CCP has appointed Adrian Blunt as director of its London studio.

He will apparently be leading development on the company's currently-unannounced first-person shooter project, previously known as Project Nova. Prior to landing the studio director role at CCP London, Blunt was VP of development at Splash Damage, having joined the firm back in 2018 as VP of operations.

Before that he held roles at the likes of EA – working on FIFA Online – Ubisoft Singapore, Square Enix and online services provider Fireteam.

CCP has said that Project Nova is no longer going by that name and that it won't be announcing codenames in future. Before, this game was being created by CCP's Reykjavík studio, but is now being solely handled by the company's London outpost. CCP previously announced that Project Nova was no more with CCP London working on a new shooter based in the world of Eve Online. In December 2020, the firm announced that it was enlisting the support of Keywords' Sperasoft studio to work on this project.

CCP London’s Game Is a Genre-Defining, Hugely Ambitious EVE-Based Shooter, Says Dev

CCP, maker of the unique sandbox MMO game EVE Online, has had plans for an EVE-based shooter game for well over a decade now. Dust 514 pioneered that concept when it launched as a PlayStation 3 exclusive back in 2013, though the game eventually shut down after only three years.

When that news came, we also learned from CCP that another EVE-based shooter was in production, an evolution of the so-called Project Legion. That was subsequently confirmed to be Project Nova, though once again fans' hopes were eventually dashed as CCP suspended development for Project Nova in late 2018.

Project Nova, Eve Online's Canceled Multiplayer Shooter, Is Getting A Reboot At CCP's London Studio

Project Nova

Even Eve fans are likely to have forgotten Project Nova, CCP's ambitious first-person shooter set in the Eve Online universe. Initially revealed back at Eve Fanfest 2018, it was quietly canceled in February of last year along with Fanfest 2020.

It wasn't the coronavirus that killed Project Nova, however, but poor reception from fans after closed alpha testing. That's according to CCP Games PR head George Kelion, who spoke to MCV about the ultimate fate of Project Nova.

"After taking [playtesting] into account, we saw that the gameplay experience of its hands-on demo did not live up to our original vision and would not achieve our ambitious goals for the project," said Kelion. CCP then took Project Nova back into "incubation" where it has remained.

INTERVIEW: CCP GAMES ON HOW TO KEEP PLAYERS IN THE SPACE RACE

CCP Interview

EVE Online is a game of numbers. You work through risk assessment, economic advantage, taxes and returns on investment. However, behind the scenes are CCP Games researchers looking to see what about the game is working, and where they should focus their efforts next.

Recently, I got an opportunity to sit down with Josh Rivers, who’s a qualitative data analyst for CCP looking to improve and strengthen the new player experience.

THE EVE EFFECT OFFERS SCI-FI OPTIMISM IN DARK TIMES

Ships in Space

Even before the global coronavirus pandemic, it was becoming rote to point out that people, by and large, were not having a good time in 2020. For one thing, there’s the accelerating devastation of climate change, which has only exacerbated economic and political instability worldwide. There’s also been massive unrest over inequality across the globe, leaving many people feeling helpless to change the tide of history.

So what can a video game do to help anything? If you ask CCP Games, a fair amount, actually. Through their massively popular game EVE Online, CCP says players feel measurable, positive, and utilitarian impacts. Or as they simply label it: “The EVE Effect.” According to internal surveys, CCP claims a full 73 percent of players have made new friends through EVE, and among those who did, 65 percent said their new sense of connection meaningfully improved their real lives outside the game. What’s more, 72 percent said it’s possible that skills they learned in EVE helped them get better jobs. In the MMORPG, players find a complex, virtual environment that naturally cultivates substantive friendships, while teaching people skills that have practical applications day-to-day: ranging from spreadsheet fluency to leadership to better communication. True, that’s not fixing wide-scale global problems, but it’s making people’s day-to-day lives feel richer, and that’s meaningful.

In a year turned upside-down, The EVE Effect might feel more impactful than ever. We spoke to three players around the world who said it’s changed their lives for the better.
