Eve Online historian recounts how players made a chaotic space opera all their own

Eve Online, the famously tedious science fiction game, turned 18 years old earlier this month. For nearly two decades, CCP Games’ epic spacefaring MMO has brought players around the world together in a shared universe called New Eden, a wild and dangerous place filled with conflict and intrigue. While the game itself has a fiction all its own, the best stories always seem to come from players. They’re the stuff of great space opera, but — like many things on the internet — all of it is ephemeral. That’s made the work of author and Eve historian Andrew Groen all the more difficult.

Groen’s first book, Empires of Eve: A History of the Great Wars of Eve Online, was published in 2016. Originally funded through Kickstarter, it remains the definitive work on Eve’s early history. It’s a tale pieced together from old message boards, rare first-hand accounts, and chat logs squirreled away in obscure corners of the internet. On Tuesday, May 25, Volume 2 goes up for sale, representing another few years of careful work. Polygon is proud to present a lengthy transcript of the entire first chapter.

We’ve already spent some time with the final product, which was recently delivered to backers. You’ll find this is a sequel written to be approachable and suitable even for readers who have no understanding of Eve or who have not read the first book.

Stargate Trailblazers Event – Break New Ground

The Stargate Trailblazers event begins on 25 May, running through to 1 June. During this event, the Empires will be working to gather resources for the construction of new stargate routes around New Eden. This has, unfortunately, attracted attention from the local pirate groups seeking to take the newly mined resources for themselves.

Which is where you come in! There’s only a limited amount of time in which to construct the gates so the Empires need as much Capsuleer help as possible. Pick a side and support your faction by taking on either timed combat sites to defend the Empire or resource harvesting sites to assist in gathering materials. Your help will go a long way towards onlining new pathways around the universe, and you’ll be well rewarded for your efforts. Make your actions leave a lasting impression on EVE Online, help break new ground!

By participating in this event, you will be rewarded with ISK and Loyalty Points which can be spent in a newly revamped LP store to get some awesome new items. Additionally, there will be daily rewards and challenges running through the period so make sure you log in to EVE and do your part to support the construction efforts!

Online gamers take on COVID-19 analysis

Scientists have been receiving help with vital coronavirus research from an unlikely team of data analysts—players of the popular online computer game EVE Online.

The gaming community has been helping to analyze data from patients with COVID-19 as part of the COVID-IP study, a collaboration between the Francis Crick Institute, King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Researchers have been examining the composition of immune cells in the blood of patients with COVID-19 to better understand how SARS-CoV-2 causes disease and why some people end up needing intensive hospital care. Their ambition is to characterize 'immune signatures," identifiable in blood tests, that can be used to guide treatment decisions and give every patient the best chance of recovery.

Nullification and Warp Module Update – Live Now!

Eve Online - Free To Play

Tactical Capsuleers,

An update that changes nullification and warp core stabilizer gameplay is now live, granting pilots of selected ships new tactical options.

The updates have ultimately been implemented to bring gameplay depth and subtlety to the use of nullification and warp core stabilizers, ensuring they serve a more meaningful role across EVE Online and its community.

Nullification and warp core stabilizers now stand as active modules with a very short activation time and a substantial cooldown between uses. That means select ships can now use them tactically, rather than limited ships being able to take advantage of nullification and warp core stabilizers.

Mobile Observatories – Live on Singularity

Eve Online - Free To Play

Observant Capsuleers,

The brand-new Mobile Observatory is now available for testing on the Singularity test server. This deployable will bring a new tool into the mix for defence against cloaking-based incursions into lowsec and nullsec regions. They will work by periodically pinging system wide, with a chance to decloak cloaked ships which may then be combat scanned and destroyed. To prevent this from having a major effect on active players, a new buff will be applied upon recent activation of your cloak which will offer resistance against the Mobile Observatory.

You can test this new deployable right now on the public test server, Singularity. Connecting to Singularity is as easy as clicking on the server option in the bottom right of the EVE launcher and switching from Tranquility to Singularity. You can then undock and test the functionality of the Mobile Observatory versus cloaked targets.

More information about Singularity can be found in the help article and you can provide valuable feedback in the test server feedback forums.

Nullification and WCS Updates – testing has begun!

Nullification

Balanced Capsuleers,

A new update to nullification and warp core stabilizer gameplay is live on Singularity and pilots are encouraged to head to the Singularity server to try out the new changes.

Converting nullification and warp core stabilizers to stand as active modules that have a substantial cooldown between uses will add depth and alleviate concerns around their previous use as a powerful means to escape.

These updates ultimately look to add gameplay depth and subtlety, while ensuring they serve a more productive role across EVE Online and its community.

Head to the EVE Online Singularity guide now to learn about joining the server! Then head to Singularity to join the test.

Do you have something to say about the update? We’d love to hear from you! Head on over to our forum to share your thoughts and feedback.

EVE Online Receives Two Major Visual Updates Including Jita 4-4 Interior and Aura

Aura

Capsuleers, rejoice! CCP announced two major visual updates for EVE Online involving the interior of Jita 4-4 Trade Hub and everyone’s favorite AI, Aura.

First up is Jita 4-4. Undoubtedly, this is the most popular exchange hub in New Eden, and as a result, it’s received a pretty major overhaul to its interior. If you were following recent developments, you’ll be aware of its architectural expansion. But with this recent update, the interior has seen some improvements.

This has resulted in a larger interior with improvements to overall cosmetics of the hub. CCP touts the detail on display inside to match the “grandeur” of the exterior. Next time you’re there, be sure to stop by and take a look.

EVE Online Celebrates 18th Anniversary with Foundation Event

EVE Online officially opens the new Foundation Quadrant today, kicking off a series of events to celebrate the game’s 18th anniversary. The event celebrations will include connected in-game story developments, art updates, player rewards, and tie-in with the upcoming annual Capsuleer Day celebration on 6-18 May.

In case you missed it, Quadrants act as EVE Online’s yearly roadmap of sorts. Four Quadrants are released each year with new and improved content and features, along with new game events focused on a particular EVE Online theme and aspect. According to the official CCP news release, the Foundation Quadrant launching today “will embody the pride felt across New Eden within four of its mightiest Empires; the Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar.”

The four empires of New Eden make up the ‘foundation’ of EVE Online, and over the game’s (inter)stellar 18-year run, have come to inhabit their own individual identity. Each empire’s identity has been developed mainly through the in-game actions of the Capsuleers who play them, and CCP wants to spotlight the pride and accomplishments the players have created and represented throughout the game’s history.

How EVE Online Players Saved Real-World Scientists 330 Years of Research on COVID-19

Eve Online

EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online game where players can mine planets, fight other players in all-out war, and fly through wormholes to reach new destinations. Now it’s helping scientists learn more about COVID-19.

Through a citizen science project called Project Discovery, players are able to help scientists in the real world solve problems that need human input, such as helping scientists discover new planets. Over the past year, they’ve been helping scientists learn more about COVID-19.

To date, 327,000 players have completed 1.37 million analysis tasks in-game, which has saved scientists 330.69 years worth of research into how the immune system responds to COVID-19. Speaking to IGN, EVE Online Creative Director, Bergur Finnbogason, explained how the project began.

“This is a project that was initially started by, or at least an idea from, [Massively Multiplayer Online Science CEO and co-founder Attila Szantner] a few years back where he was looking at citizen science projects around the world, all over the internet,” Finnbogason said. “He started seeing this pattern in these projects where basically... these fantastic projects would happen… with super worthy causes… but people would come in, try it once, and then never come back.”

Foundation – New Quadrant starts soon!

Eve Online

The Foundation Quadrant is upon us as EVE’s 18th birthday dawns! This new Quadrant, officially starting on 4 May, will offer a series of connected events, art updates, rewards, and so much more. Foundation will embody the pride felt across New Eden within four of its mightiest Empires; the Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar.

Since 2020, EVE Online releases have been divided into four Quadrants each year, packed with exciting events, game features, login campaigns, and balance updates. Each Quadrant has a unique theme focused on a specific aspect of EVE Online, which guides the type of content you can expect to see. Quadrants are not limited to delivering content within a set theme only, but most will be connected to it to provide a holistic experience for Capsuleers in New Eden. The content itself is delivered in smaller increments throughout the Quadrant’s duration instead of a single big patch, giving you something interesting to do on every space adventure!

AMARR DREADNOUGHTS DESTROYED IN PITCHED AMARR-MINMATAR BATTLE OVER FLOSESWIN IV

Floseswin, Metropolis – Orbital bombardment dreadnoughts affiliated to the Amarr Empire have been destroyed in yet another highly-destructive battle over the fate of a planet.

Dreadnoughts bearing the identifiers of the Shining Flame mercenary company carried out a siege laser strike on the surface of Floseswin IV, apparently inflicting significant damage in the vicinity of the wartorn city of Jolan Kraal. Reports have indicated that surface forces presumed to be remnants of Amarr troops on the planet also carried out their own attack, even guiding weapons fire onto Jolan Kraal using surface-to-orbit targeting lasers. The assault was curtailed abruptly by the appearance of several capsuleer pirate supercarriers that proceeded to engage and destroy the dreadnoughts before retreating from a Shining Flame battleship fleet and Amarr loyalist counter-attack.

Minmatar Republic Fleet and Brutor Vanguard forces have been fighting to relieve the planet and the Republic Command's Floseswin IV Liberation Army has activated all reserve defense units. Planetary defense batteries at a number of locations on the surface have been firing on any vessel attempting to breach atmosphere. Republic Command aerospace fighter wings have been fully-scrambled and have engaged a number of targets in low orbit and the upper atmosphere.

CSM 16 Elections are approaching!

The CSM15 term is slowly coming to an end, but despite not having the pleasure to meet in person, we managed to remain productive by interacting daily via established Slack channels with EVE Online teams and hosting regular meetings with members across the CCP organization to cover topics ranging from new game feature designs, balance, marketing, live operations to reflecting on the past and brainstorming future opportunities.

CCP London’s Game Is a Genre-Defining, Hugely Ambitious EVE-Based Shooter, Says Dev

CCP, maker of the unique sandbox MMO game EVE Online, has had plans for an EVE-based shooter game for well over a decade now. Dust 514 pioneered that concept when it launched as a PlayStation 3 exclusive back in 2013, though the game eventually shut down after only three years.

When that news came, we also learned from CCP that another EVE-based shooter was in production, an evolution of the so-called Project Legion. That was subsequently confirmed to be Project Nova, though once again fans' hopes were eventually dashed as CCP suspended development for Project Nova in late 2018.

Project Nova, Eve Online's Canceled Multiplayer Shooter, Is Getting A Reboot At CCP's London Studio

Project Nova

Even Eve fans are likely to have forgotten Project Nova, CCP's ambitious first-person shooter set in the Eve Online universe. Initially revealed back at Eve Fanfest 2018, it was quietly canceled in February of last year along with Fanfest 2020.

It wasn't the coronavirus that killed Project Nova, however, but poor reception from fans after closed alpha testing. That's according to CCP Games PR head George Kelion, who spoke to MCV about the ultimate fate of Project Nova.

"After taking [playtesting] into account, we saw that the gameplay experience of its hands-on demo did not live up to our original vision and would not achieve our ambitious goals for the project," said Kelion. CCP then took Project Nova back into "incubation" where it has remained.

EVE Online shining up its starbases for Odyssey

Eve Online

In theory, player-owned starbases are a major component of EVE Online's gameplay. In practice, the acronym for these structures is seen as being unintentionally appropriate. But if you're an owner of a POS and hoping for some love from the development team, you can take heart that Odyssey is aiming to incorporate several new features to make these bases more desirable and worthwhile. Even if not all of these features are certain inclusions just yet, they're still enticing additions.

Among the major changes coming to starbases are the inclusion of private hangars, repackaging modules within starbase arrays, and the removal of sovereignty requirements from capital ship maintenance arrays. The UI will also be tweaked and improved, and players will be able to swap Strategic Cruiser subsystems from a starbase while accessing any of the starbase's arrays from within the facility's shield. For full details on the hard work being done to improve these structures, check out the full development blog.

A New Live Event for July

Eve Online

Attention capsuleers! Have you ever pointed your camera drones at some distant nebula or beautiful sight and thought “I should have studied photography at the Science and Trade Institute instead of becoming a pod pilot”? Well, if so, Team Illuminati has a new event coming up for you to scratch that artistic itch of yours, while also giving you the opportunity to get some cool stuff. And for those of you who don't like snapping pictures, hopefully it'll give you a chance to blow up the potential photographers.

During the summer months, we here at the Illuminati Team are taking an opportunity to try something different with live events for a while. For the past year, we've been running events with actors in system which players get to come and interact with; either to help them, negotiate with them, or just blow them up. Now we'd like to try look at other possibilities.

For our first experiment, we're holding this photography contest on behalf of the Sisters of EVE, who are well known for exploring the universe of New Eden. We're hoping to allow a wider range of players to participate, over a variety of time zones and locations, with different playstyles than we've been able to support so far. We hope you like it!
