Online gamers take on COVID-19 analysis

Scientists have been receiving help with vital coronavirus research from an unlikely team of data analysts—players of the popular online computer game EVE Online.

The gaming community has been helping to analyze data from patients with COVID-19 as part of the COVID-IP study, a collaboration between the Francis Crick Institute, King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Researchers have been examining the composition of immune cells in the blood of patients with COVID-19 to better understand how SARS-CoV-2 causes disease and why some people end up needing intensive hospital care. Their ambition is to characterize 'immune signatures," identifiable in blood tests, that can be used to guide treatment decisions and give every patient the best chance of recovery.
